i can’t believe i didn’t know this place existed.

The real reason I even heard about this place was the desire to attend the Instant Gratification: Los Angeles poloroid exhibit. After all, it was a whole exhibit dedicated to poloroids. But, since my sister couldn’t attend the night exhibition, we decided to head out for a bit of inspiration during the day instead.

Bergamot Station is an artist enclave located just north of the 10 freeway. On a dead-end street, next to the Santa Monica recycling center, it is almost hidden from the casual onlooker. It features over 30 galleries with rotating exhibits, as well as a few permanent stores, architecture and design firms and the Santa Monica Museum of Art.

The site was originally a stop for the Red Line Trolley which ran from Los Angeles to the Santa Monica Pier. The trolley car system met its demise in 1953 and the space was used for various packing and operations plants. The city of Santa Monica eventually purchased the property and left it abandoned until 1994 when it was turned into the now Bergamot Station.

Incidentally, a Bergamot is a type of flower that was once prevalent in the area, not to be confused with the Bergamot orange.

As you walk around, you can still see many of the old train tracks embedded in the ground.

I wasn’t allowed to take pictures inside any of the galleries, so I took a picture of the trash can instead.

I loved the corrugated metal buildings.

Even an artist need to play ball.

Bergamot Station also houses a small cafe which offers a great selections of salads, sandwiches, and breakfast items. I had their lentil vegetable soup, a special, which was wonderful.

This is a great half-day excursion, as it just big enough to get your fill without being overwhelmed. Also, because it is a collection of independent galleries, you have a diversity of stylesIf you don’t like the sometimes stuffy atmosphere of an art museum, this place is definitely worth a try.

Ooh. I found a space invader.
